Three Great Powers to Overcome the Wiles of the Devil

The lukewarm church and the religious cult are both powerless to stand against the wiles of the devil. Both are missing the power of love, the power of forgiveness and the power of the resurrection – three great powers to overcome the wiles of the devil. Satan and the unclean spirits (or fallen angels) are incapable of overcoming these three great powers made manifest in God’s true children, the faithful remnant. This is good news for the end time saints who have witnessed the influence of Satan to capture so many in our day. Addiction to prescription drugs, both pain killers and psychiatric, have decimated the population leaving most under the control of demonic influence and the power of sin. A lukewarm church has done little in equipping the believers to stand against the wiles of the devil. The religious cult has robbed the believers of their power to stand against the trickery and deception of Satan. Psychiatry and the medical professionals are throwing different labels on people at the speed of light to explain their bizarre and unbelievable behavior. The world, the lukewarm church, and the religious cults are powerless to stand against the wiles of the devil. On the other hand, true believers have that power.

First, let’s look at the power of love. Christian soldier it’s past time to pick up the mantle of love, which is our sure defense against the evil one. True love that flows from God through us to others empowers the Christian to join Him in His work. The power of this love opens the eyes of the unbelievers who have been blinded by the god of this world. It unlocks the prison doors of the religious cult who have captured their followers with a strict legalism, which goes well beyond Holy Scripture. Love never lets anyone needlessly suffer to drive out sin, as the cults love to do. There are numerous stories where cults have locked their followers in rooms of solitary confinement for days on end to drive out their sin. They have forgotten that love knows the power of forgiveness. They have forgotten that the power of love rejects the sin and its entrapments in the world, but not the unbeliever for whom Christ died. Love goes the extra mile, it turns the other cheek, and it does not curse but always blesses. Love looks beyond the rough exterior of an individual to the heart that is crying out for help. It looks beyond the person in bondage to gross immorality to a heart that is struggling to understand their bondage. There is great power in love to defeat the wiles of the devil.

The power of love also motivates people to reach beyond their comfort zone to stand for truth and righteousness. It motivates them to carry God’s message to the ends of the earth to save fallen humanity. The power of love will not allow the lukewarm church to cast them into the prison of accepted idleness or spend their time in busyness accomplishing nothing for the Kingdom. Oh, how the lukewarm church wants to busy itself in senseless games and entertainment instead of doing the Master’s work. Oh, how the religious cult wants to rehearse their false doctrines over and over again driving their followers deeper into bondage and enslavement to the devil. On the other hand, the power of love overcomes obstacles, steps out on faith, and trust in God to touch the heart of man by rescuing him from the clutches of the enemy. Oh, what joy it is to see the simple gospel set people free, giving them a brand-new life in Christ, where old things pass away. To see them excited for the cause of Christ rushing out to tell their neighbors and their family of their new encounter with the living Lord. There is great power in love to overcome the wiles of the devil.

Along with the power of love every Christian will stand against the wiles of the devil by understanding the power of forgiveness. Unfortunately, the teaching of forgiveness and its power to release people from the bondage of Satan is not taught. So, the enemy is busy sowing the seed of bitterness causing much of the population to harbor bad feelings against others. Feelings that never get resolved, but eat away like gangrene in the heart of those unwilling to forgive. This bitterness has grown like a runaway virus effecting people both emotionally and psychologically causing erratic and dangerous behavior. Then, the old devil comes to the rescue offering an array of psychiatric drugs or pain killers to solve their problem. The pharmaceutical industry is making billions of dollars with its promise to make things better, but the problem never gets solved. In fact, in most cases the problem only gets worse, because of the many side effects of the medication. But that’s not the whole story because those unwilling to forgive are now living a life without forgiveness from God, unable to enjoy their new life in Christ with all its benefits.

So how do we as true believers in Christ tap into the power of forgiveness? If we follow three wonderful principles then we will not only learn how to forgive, but in time we will actually forget the trespass against us. The first principle of forgiveness is to never bring the trespass up again to the offending party, which always keeps the trespass alive and well – allowing the seed of bitterness to take root. The second principle of forgiveness is to never share the trespass with others (unless your life is in danger and you need to share it with the authorities). Now these do get more difficult as we move along. Most everyone wants sympathy from others when they have been mistreated or wronged in some way. It’s part of our human nature (or should I say our old sin nature). So, to truly forgive another we must not pass it around to others, which keeps the offense alive. In counseling, I have encountered people telling me of a trespass that I believed just happened by how it was affecting them, but then after further counseling discovered that the trespass happened years ago. The bitterness had fully blossomed. The final, and most difficult principle is to not dwell on the trespass. Every time the devil brings up the trespass we must immediately throw it out – stop thinking about. To follow these principles will truly help us to forgive the trespass not allowing it to have an emotional or psychological impact upon our lives. There is great power in forgiveness to overcome the wiles of the devil.

Finally, there is power in the resurrection, which the Apostle Paul even longed for. (See Philippians 3:10) Simply put the power of the resurrection is to allow the believer to experience all that the new life in Christ offers. To be all that Christ wants us to be, to experience all the Spiritual Gifts and the power to perform those gifts to the glory of God. Yet, once again the devil works very hard to keep us from experiencing the new life by his deceptive wiles. He convinces most believers in the lukewarm church and the religious cults that they are not good enough to experience the new life, that they are too tainted with past sins, and unworthy of this magnificent gift. Furthermore, he keeps the new believer looking back believing that he cannot separate himself from the old life. And when they fall or trip up in sin, there’s the devil whispering in their ear that the old life will never pass away for them. But what does the Bible say, “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new” (II Corinthians 5:17).

Friends, this takes faith, believing that God will deliver on His promise. There is great power in the resurrection to overcome the wiles of the devil. As we continue to put off the old life and put on the new then we grow closer to the risen Lord and are able to experience all the Spiritual gifts that He would have us to perform to the glory of God. It is wonderful to experience power in the gifts that He gives to every true believer. We don’t all have the same Spiritual gift, but we are given the gift most needed for a specific occasion. Through the years I have experienced many such gifts knowing full well it was not my ability, nor my own giftedness, nor my own talent, but God working though me for His own glory. I have seen food multiplied, people healed, people saved (who I thought impossible), people changed right before my very eyes. Also, I have felt the power of God to preach and write only what He wants to see it have a profound effect upon the audience. Dear children, as we approach the end do not let the devil keep you in bondage. Don’t let him trip you up with his many wiles, but step out on faith believing that God has given us the power to overcome. The power of love, the power of forgiveness, and the power of the resurrection. Amen

The Immortal Message of Easter

On Easter morn, we are drawn back to the message of the Cross that all-encompassing will of God. We are catapulted beyond the simple historical message of Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection to the infinite heights of God’s will for our life in Christ Jesus. If we only see the historical event steeped in tradition then we have missed the message. In the Apostle Paul’s farewell message to the Ephesian elders he declared, “For I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God” (Acts 20:27). And the starting place in this wonderful journey in understanding the whole will of God is by following the admonition of Christ to pick up our cross and follow Him. The Bible says, “And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me” (Luke 9:23). To pick up the cross means death. It simply cannot mean anything else. It is a conscious decision to follow Christ in His death by dying to self. As we enter the dark night of our soul we discover that everything of the old sin nature must die. Every vestige of pride must be nailed to the cross. Every glimmer of self-will must die with Christ. Through faith in Christ our death to self becomes a reality. Step by step we are able to put off the old life.

The good news is we are no longer held in bondage to the old life. Old sins are forgiven by the precious blood of the Lamb. As Christ hung on the Cross of Calvary all our sins, past, present and future have been laid on Him removing that eternal barrier between us and a holy God. “As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us” (Psalm 103:12). Through faith in Christ all our sins are forgiven and its power broken. Satan was soundly defeated at the Cross and no longer has power over those who have put their faith and trust in Jesus Christ. Only by following Christ in His death on the Cross can this power of sin and the devil be broken forever in the life of the believer. Don’t let another Easter pass you by without making a conscious decision to pick up your cross daily and follow Him. Don’t fear death to self, because on the other side there is real life in Christ. Dying to self and putting off the old life is only the first part of the journey. We must continue to understand the full will of God.

Christians from around the world will celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ, because without it we are still trapped in our sin, in bondage to the old life, and resting under the power of Satan. On that glorious Easter morn as the rock was rolled back and Christ rose from the dead a new and living way was opened to all those who would now put their faith in Him. How magnificent is this new life in Christ is beyond our finite comprehension? For those who have journeyed deep into the new life in Christ will confirm that every day becomes more glorious. Unfortunately, many have not journeyed much further than the door and have rested contently on the milk of God’s Word. As mere infants, they delight in retelling the same old stories over and over again believing somehow that they alone will bring forth spiritual fruit and a deeper life in Christ. They pass over the commands of God as mere suggestions or only relevant for some future dispensation. They pass over the gifts of the Spirit as if they only appeared in the first century. Tragically many Christians never really experience the new life in Christ thus celebrating the resurrection as mere tradition reenacting its historical event.

He is risen! Christ has risen from the dead! In faith, we follow Christ in His resurrection putting off the old life by dying to self and putting on the new life by becoming obedient to His commands. Let’s be clear commands are not works. We have been saved by faith and all our good works will not get us one inch closer to heaven or a deeper life in Christ. On the other hand, the commands of God teach us how to live this new life in Him. Through our faith in Christ we have already been made into a new creation. The old has gone, behold all things are new. The Bible says, “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new” (II Corinthians 5:17). When we put off the old life then we are empty and ready for the Master’s use. Self and tradition cannot put on the new life, but only Christ through His wonderful commands demonstrating the will of God in us. Do you want to grow spiritually from one degree of glory to another? Do you want that deeper life in Christ? Then be filled with the Holy Spirit of God and allow Him to lead you step by step to become obedient to the whole counsel of God through His holy commands written on your heart. As you celebrate the resurrection this Easter morn let me encourage you to leave the elementary teachings about Christ and go on to maturity. How marvelous to be in Christ growing into a deeper relationship with Him. Thank you Lord for your death and resurrection all praise honor and glory to your Name. Thank you Lord for our new life in you. Praise God.

What’s Impeding Your Faith?

The Bible says, “Nevertheless, when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth (Luke 18:8b).” The answer is not a lot for most in the later days will allow many things to impede their faith. Although there will be a faithful remnant, I am sure that their faith will be mocked by the world. It will seem inconsistent with reason and against all the established norms of a pagan world. Unlike the faithless who had long given up their faith, they will continue to cry out day and night for God to vindicate them by righteously judging their oppressors. They will continue to cry out asking God to fulfill all His promises, especially the one that does not allow them to be tempted beyond what they can handle (See I Corinthians 10:13). Over the course of time they have learned well the things that impede their faith, being careful to resist them at every point. So, what are these things that impede our faith?

Perhaps the biggest thing to impede our faith is listening to, believing in, and appropriating the world’s wisdom into our life. Clearly, God has given us everything we need for life and godliness. So, to chase after the knowledge in the world puts you on a very slippery slope. Of course, we are not talking about all knowledge, but the knowledge that pertains to life, such as, godly communication, instructions concerning our interpersonal relationships, and specific instructions concerning our spousal relationship. It gives knowledge to parents on how to raise their children in the Lord and their financial responsibility to one’s family. It gives lessons on spiritual growth and the use of our spiritual gifts. It gives directives concerning our relationship to both the church and the government. It also gives timeless knowledge on how to care for our own body by learning how to deal with emotional and psychological problems, along with good eating habits, exercise, and sleep. There is endless knowledge from God’s Holy Word that gives us everything we need for living a godly life. However, if we refuse to follow God’s direction then we are inclined to follow a mixed bag of knowledge from the world and from our self.

This assimilated information moves us further away from God’s divine plan for our life, thus impeding our faith, and putting us on the downward path toward death and destruction. Our faith in God will cause us to seek out His knowledge alone, on how to live out life pleasing to Him. A life full of spiritual energy to become all that God wants us to be in this life. A life full of indescribable joy that has learned the power of forgiveness, of turning the other cheek, and going the extra mile with others. A healthy life both mentally and physically that has learned from God how to deal immediately with grief, loneness, guilt, depression, anxiety, and many other problems, not by using psychiatric drugs or receiving the world’s counsel, but by following the Wonderful Counselor and His methods that have worked for thousands of years before psychology had ever arrived on the scene. The more we follow the Knowledge of God by putting it into our lives the stronger our faith grows and the more we grow spiritually from one degree of glory to another. Friends, please don’t follow your self-knowledge and the world’s knowledge, especially when it disagrees with God’s knowledge, which is His divine plan for your life.

The second thing that will impede our faith is giving up, which is demonstrated by our lack of prayer and the reading of God’s Word – the Bible. It is so sad that so many just go through the motions of being a faithful Christian. They may pray, but not from the heart believing that God is actually listening. They don’t pray believing if it’s God’s will then the prayer will be answered. They may even read the Bible, but they get nothing out of it or what they do get comes from their own self-consciousness and not from God or His Holy Spirit. They simply give up trying to become all that God wants them to be in this life. So, many of them chase after the world’s entertainment, sports, hobbies, and other social activities to fill up the void in their life caused by not following God as they should. The faithful Christian prays all the time believing in his heart that God is not only listening, but also giving him direction through the indwelling Holy Spirit. We must not give up. To give up impedes our faith, stops our spiritual growth, and separates us from all the joy of being a new creation in Christ.

The third thing that impedes our faith is not believing that God will deliver us from our oppressors. These I call the silent Christians. They go around walking on egg shells being careful to never rock the boat. They go out of their way to act like others in the world so they can be accepted and not mocked or ridiculed. Refusing to step out on faith weakens our faith, which in time will impede our faith. Although it is clear from Scripture that God will vindicate us, many have taken the low path and decided not to trust God to deliver them from those who may cause them harm. This vindication from God could come at the end of our life. We may not even get to see it, but it will come. It may not be soon, but it will come quickly often times when we least expect it. The Bible says, “And shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry day and night unto him, though he bear long with them? I tell you that he will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth” (Luke 18:7-8)? The dividing line has already been drawn between the liberal and the conservative. It has already been drawn between the Christian who decides to follow all of God’s knowledge in the Bible alone and for those who have decided to assimilate it with the world’s knowledge. The later proudly proclaims that God simply did not give us all the information needed for the 21st Century and it’s up to humanity to fill in the blanks. Yet, they are mistaken, because the knowledge is there. It just needs to be re-discovered and put into the life of the believer. Christians who do not want to impede their faith must step out on faith by proclaiming the truth to everyone who spouts the world’s knowledge and spurns the knowledge of God. To do so will restore our faith.

The fourth thing that impedes our faith is listening to the lies of the enemy. He will tell you that you are just wasting your time in prayer. Better just go so see a Doctor or a Psychiatrist. Clearly, there is a time to see a Doctor to address our physical concerns, but even that does not limit our need for prayer. For I have seen many miracles where even the Doctors admitted to observing a real miracle in their patients. The enemy also lies about your worth before God. As a new person in Christ you are worth everything to Him, but the enemy will whisper in your ear that you are worthless by reminding you of the things you did in your past. The enemy will tell you, “How could God forgive someone like you?” He may even go so far as to say that you are not even saved. To listen to the lies of the enemy will impede your faith. To listen to God alone will increase your faith allowing you to stand firm against the enemy in all of his malicious attacks.

Will Christ find faith upon the earth when He returns in glory? The good news is that Christ will find a very strong faith among the faithful remnant, but He will find none among many who claim to be Christian. Let me encourage you dear friends to rediscover all the treasures in the Bible and see for yourself that God has indeed given us everything we need for life and godliness. In fact, the Bible says so, “According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue” (II Peter 1:3). Amen. The Bible never mixes words. If it says all things that pertain to life and godliness, then that is exactly what it means. So, please dear friend get out your Bibles, some of you may need to dust them off, and start to read day and night if necessary until you come to a deeper understanding of this knowledge that will strengthen your faith and prepare you for the days ahead.

Four Most Horrifying Words

What a glorious day that will be at the Second Coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but for some it will not be so glorious. The unbelieving world will cower in their caves crying out to the rocks to fall upon them and hide them from the coming Lord and His wrath. (See Revelation 6:16-17). On the other hand, all those who claimed to believe in Christ will be awakened at an hour they did not expect and will rush out to meet the Lord with glad tidings in their heart thinking all is well. They all without exception had become drowsy and fell asleep, because the promise of His coming had been for a very long time. To this date its been nearly two thousand years since the promise was first given to His disciples. Perhaps the great missionary efforts had ceased and revivals had become a relic of the past replaced with conferences geared to a favorite doctrine. Even one on one evangelism was frowned upon my most for being too exclusive. It appears that the entire church drifted off to sleep and was only now awakened at the news of Christ’s return which no doubt caused much panic among all to let their light shine in a very dark world as they all rushed to meet the bridegroom.

Let’s be clear that these were all virgins who came out to meet the Lord. (See the Parable of the Ten Virgins in Matthew 25:1-13). They all at one point in their life repented of their sins and promised to follow Jesus Christ as their Savior. On the surface, they all pretty much looked and acted the same and considered themselves believers and looked forward to spending eternity in heaven. Yet, when Jesus Christ observed them at His coming He saw to kinds of virgins, foolish and wise. The foolish virgins thought they had everything going for them, no doubt believers who had repented log ago of their immorality, learned all the doctrines, faithfully attended their respective churches, and probably even did their share of good works. However, one thing was tragically missing, they mostly relied on their own light and rarely sought the greater light of the Holy Spirit, and when they did, they didn’t really use it, but was looking to cover all the bases. They had forgotten even how to secure the greater light when the hour had grown late and it was needful to be full of the Spirit at the coming of our Lord. All they could muster at the time was their religious light expressing all the correct words of love and sound doctrine, but empty of the indwelling Spirit. How tragic to be told I never knew you. The four most horrifying words! To be told we had no intimate relationship. Can you hear Christ say, “You never allowed me to direct your path; you often stopped your ears or ignored my instructions; you were not obedient to all my commands, but obedient only to those you chose to follow.”

Whereas, the wise virgins always depended on Me to direct their path and worked very hard at discerning my voice as opposed to the voice of their old nature or the voice of the enemy. Right in the beginning we started building an intimate relationship becoming a true host of the Holy Spirit, not to take over, but to work with them to build a new life in Christ. It was not long before the barnacles of the old sin nature began to fall off. They eventually became free of all their self-imposed bondages where in time the old life was not even recognized by their closest friends. They grew ever more dependent upon the inner light of the indwelling Spirit and they rarely sought to let their own light shine, but always giving credit to the greater light, all to the glory of God. On the other hand, the foolish virgins always steeped in pride easily took credit for their own religious accomplishments. They even went so far as proclaiming that their works of casting out evil or witnessing healing was done by the Holy Spirit for whom they had no intimate relationship. Jesus said, I never knew you. The foolish virgins grieved the Holy Spirit many times and attempted to put out the Holy Spirit’s fire. Instead of recognizing the unique work of the Holy Spirit they attributed it to some other explanation. They also rebuked the working of the Holy Spirit by denying its powerful working in our day and grieved the Holy Spirit by refusing to follow His leading.

On the other hand, the wise virgins fanned the flames of the Holy Spirit by allowing Him to bring forth great miracles of healing or casting out the enemy when they were positive it was He who was doing the work. They never grieved the indwelling Spirit, but always listened to His voice and leading. At the Second Coming of Jesus Christ guess who was ready and allowed the greater light to shine forth to illuminate the darkness of the hour. Although they both slept, it was the wise virgins who awoke to let their inner light of the indwelling Spirit to shine brightly. They were ready at His coming and rejoiced in meeting the Bridegroom. Let me tell you the foolish virgins were very shocked to hear the words of our returning Lord. Words they never expected to hear. How could Jesus Christ say, “I never knew you!” How about all the work in the Kingdom, it meant nothing. How about all the Bible studies and times of worship, it meant nothing. Yes, they never really knew the Holy Spirit and Christ said, “I never knew you.” To know the Holy Spirit is to be known by Christ.

Friends, it not too late to start building a personal, intimate relationship with the indwelling Holy Spirit following His lead and listening to His voice alone. It is the Spirits primary job to convict the believer to turn immediately from their sin and follow the path of righteousness. If you are not convicted by the Holy Spirit when you are openly sinning against God, then don’t try to convince me that you have the indwelling Holy Spirit. Because He will convict you and it will be the most horrible feeling that you are openly being held accountable to the highest court in heaven, for your sin against a Holy God. You will feel tremendously uncomfortable continuing in the sin. Secondly, we are admonished by Scripture to keep in the step with the indwelling Spirit. So how do we keep in step with the Spirit. We keep in step by doing what we see the Spirit doing. Don’t be resistant or sluggish, but step out quickly, keep in step. It’s essential that we learn to recognize the voice of the indwelling Spirit and to recognize His moving within so that we can quickly step out and keep in step with Him. If it’s just a flash of inspiration, a light coming on, or a still small voice we need to immediately confirm that it comes from the Spirit, obey and follow His guidance. Dear Christian don’t run ahead of Him trying to magnify our own little light, but learn to wait upon the greater light that leads us step by step. Clearly, we may not know the whole plan or even the outcome, so it will be necessary to trust His leading.

To be filled with the Spirit is allowing Him to have full access to everything we think, say, or do. This is essential for every true believer, because it confirms that we are following one of the fundamentals of our faith as discussed last week. If the enemy brings bad thoughts or images to your mind immediately seek the Spirits help in casting them out and focusing on the beautiful things of Christ. The Bible says, “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy – think about such things” (Philippians 4:8, NIV). It is the Holy Spirit’s job to help you keep your mind pure, free from all evil thoughts and images. Please, dear children, Allow the indwelling Spirit to do His job.

Dear children once we have built and maintained a personal relationship with the Holy Spirit then we can say that we are ready for the Second Coming of Christ and will be eager to go out to meet the Bridegroom. It will be glorious day indeed. However, let’s not miss the incredible joy that we experience now and every day having the indwelling Spirit bring so many good things into our life. Remember, it is He who helps us put off the old life and put on the new. It is He who writes God’s commands upon our heart so that we do not sin against Him and so that we learn how to love God and one another. Remember it is He who produces every manner of Spiritual fruit in the life of the believer. This is not just wishful thinking for if we allow the Spirit to do His job then He will produce fruit of the Spirit which is “love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and, temperance.” Yes, it is His job to make us into a new creation. Remember it is He who gives us the needed tools (Spiritual Gifts) for building up the Kingdom of God. Where would we be without the Apostles, prophets, and teachers to guide and instruct God’s children. Where would we be without the other gifts working in the life of the Church – the gift of service, helps, giving, exhortation, administration, or encouragement. And I can insure you these are not all the gifts for there are many and various gifts given to build up the Kingdom here on earth. To deny these gifts is clearly to put out the Spirit’s fire causing you to align with the foolish virgin.

So, do you really want to be ready for the Second Coming of Jesus Christ? Then start building a relationship with the indwelling Spirit. Some of you may need to repent first and turn from your sins asking the Spirit to take full control of your life. I pray that you will, for the time is short.

Formidable Voice to a Divided World

Should there be unity among all believers? This question has captivated the heart of man since the time of Christ. The Catholic church still embraces this notion of unity, but now allows great diversity among its ranks. The evangelical church has splintered off into a multitude of denominations each with their own exclusive doctrines and practices shunning the rest. This has also given rise to other fringe groups producing both fanatical and the heretical. Yet, Jesus Christ prayed for unity among all true believers, that they would be one as the Father and the Son are One, in unity of thought and action. Jesus went on to say that this unity among true believers would be a witness to the world that He was sent by the Father. Unity among all true believers would be a witness! Let me suggest that this would be a very powerful witness to a dying world that has all but rejected Jesus Christ as the only Savior. The voice of Christians and the diversity of His churches has had little effect upon the world. No one is listening. Yet they listen to the heathen in protest, while their numbers are very small, their voices are united. The unrighteous minority has had a profound effect upon the direction of this country, while the Christian Church has had almost none. Christian unity can have a formidable voice to a divided world, but before we continue it’s necessary to deal with the one objection that many have in our day when discussing unity.
