Why Do Bad Things Happen?

The question most asked, even by professed followers of Christ is, “Why do bad things happen to me?” That’s a great question. It is a question that’s been asked since the beginning of time. It is a question that has haunted humanity since the dawn of history. If you seriously want to know the answer, keep reading. This is a question that must be brought before the Lord in deep prayer and meditation, taking time to listen to His every word. We live in a day where the age-old understanding of fate has resurfaced, especially among the unbelievers. Unbelievers now espouse their senseless rhetoric, “That things just happen” solidifying their belief in fate. This is a belief that everything that happens is beyond our control, contrary to what we do or don’t do; if we are bad or good it makes no difference to the outcome. Although this kind of thinking may help them to accept the onslaught of bad things happening to them, it doesn’t answer the question. It only delays the inevitable, which often leads to stress, psychological trauma, mental illnesses, or something far worse, eternal separation from God.

Let’s start at the beginning. Why are so many professed believers in our day struggling with stress, agitation, anger, aggression, or any other classified psychological problems? These problems can lead to a host of other problems, such as loss of productivity, the ability to manage one’s time, and decision making that’s irrational. It can also lead to depression causing them to withdraw from the real world. Although many of these new problems may seem like the underlying problem, they are not. Although the professionals of psychology would agree and be happy to schedule counseling or drug therapy, we must dig much deeper to discover the real underlying problem that’s causing your difficulties. We must dig deeper to discover what’s causing you to experience one tragic circumstance after another. I must tell you; I have great sympathy and pity for these poor souls. Simply put they are not living the life that Christ promised them when He came to earth to show humanity a new Way. They are not living the bountiful life full of wondrous joy and the peace that defies understanding. They are not experiencing a brand-new life in Christ that’s getting better every day. Whatever happened to their new life in Christ?

What’s even sadder about these professed believers is some have a real heart for helping others, especially among their own family members, but they just don’t seem to have the time, the strength, or the determination to follow through with their promises or intentions. Whatever happened to the new life in Christ where their joy and peace are not affected by the unrelenting problems that are weighing so heavily upon them, day after day? We must dig much deeper. When we do, we are confronted with a word that has all but escaped the dictionary of modern humanity. It is a word that most don’t want to talk about. We have noticed that professional counselors don’t ever mention the word. We have observed that we are hearing it far less from the pulpits in the modern church. I hope that you are sitting down. The word is sin. This little three-letter word is at the root of most of your problems. I will go so far as to say that sin is at the very root of the world’s problems. The problem with sin is that it’s in our nature to sin. This is referred to as the old sin nature. Until we get a handle on the old sin nature, we will never experience the continuous joy and peace of our new life in Christ.

The good news is that Jesus Christ came to show us the Way. He came to show us how to overcome the old sin nature, one step at a time, through faith. Before we talk about this good news, let’s digress a bit and ask the question, how can this old sin nature cause us so many problems, to experience one calamity after another. There are many sins, which any society can refer to as a transgression against their laws, which you will be held accountable by some form of unpleasant punishment. Today, we want to talk about a higher law or laws that you will also be held accountable to by an all-powerful God, the God of creation. Make no mistake, God hears and sees everything. Unlike man, God does not forget nor can He be fooled by your double talk or outrageous lies. He will not be fooled by your deniability. Don’t forget that the Bible says, “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). We all have the old sin nature and the propensity to sin. This is the first step in overcoming the old sin nature, to openly admit that you are a sinner, and if you are honest, then you will admit that you have sinned every day. If you cannot admit that, then you need to take a long hard look at God’s Law, that not only deals with your actions but with your every thought.

Do you think that God can’t see your outburst of anger? Do you think that God can’t see your outrageous lies? Do you think God cannot see your pride? Do you think God can’t see your lust or sexual immorality? No, God sees it all, along with your every thought. The Bible is very clear that a man will reap what he has sown (see Galatians 6:8). Don’t think for a minute that things just happen, that’s fate. With God, nothing happens by accident. If you are not following the Way, then you will be disciplined by a loving God (see Hebrews 12:6-7). Often God will discipline His children by letting them go to experience the works of their own hands. God will also let them go by withdrawing His divine protection allowing them to reap the full consequences of their sin. As an example, let’s just look at the one sin that God hates the most, lying. The Bible says, “Lying lips are abomination to the LORD: but they that deal truly are his delight” (Proverbs 12:22). Think about this dear friend the next time you say you are going to do something, and then don’t do it, and worse yet, say you never said it. Shockingly, when you lie to another, then you are also lying to God. A man will reap what he has sown. He will reap the consequences of his every sin.

Now, let’s go deeper to discover the good news. How can we overcome the old sin nature? If you are a professed believer, then you have already taken the first step in believing that Jesus Christ, the Son of God, took your place on the Cross to pay for all sins past, present, and future. That cleared the way to a new life in Christ through faith. Although this is the greatest miracle to be made into a new creation, where old things truly pass away, we still need to follow the Way in overcoming the old sin nature. If you don’t follow the Way, then nothing much will change after the initial glow of believing in Christ wears off. That’s where most professed believers are today allowing the old sin nature to rule their life making them a target for Satan and the powers of darkness. This alone has caused a boom at the counselor’s office even among professed Christians, which has caused the church to raise up their own counselors following the methodology of the world’s counselors. We can, through the power of Christ, put off the old life of sin and misery, and to put on the new life in Christ, filled with incredible joy and amazing peace. We have the power to overcome the old sin nature.

So, how can we be successful in overcoming the old sin nature? Here is the key, we must read the anointed Word of God, the Bible, and discover the things we should not be doing or thinking, replacing them with thoughts and actions that are in accord with His Word. The Bible gives us some wonderful examples of putting off the old life and putting on the new life in Christ (carefully read Ephesians 4:19-32). When you do this, then you will discover that you are growing up in Christ from one degree of glory to another (see II Corinthians 3:18). If you are not growing up in Christ then you are still giving in to the old sin nature and continuing to reap all the horrible consequences of walking in the old life, the old sin nature. Now, you can say, I know why bad things are always happening to me. Won’t you start today, dear Christian, putting off the old life and putting on the new life in Christ? Then you will begin your spiritual journey, growing from one degree of glory to another. Spiritual growth must happen daily to overcome the old sin nature. Are you growing today

When the Witness Stops Witnessing (Video)

Let me remind you that the testimony of the witnesses is so strong it’s like fire coming forth from their mouth to destroy the arguments of those who come against them (Revelation 11:5). Their testimony is like our testimony, which is what Jesus Christ has done for us. The Bible says that there is great power in the message of the Cross and specifically our testimony (I Corinthians 1:18). When the Witness Stops Witnessing

Our testimony says, before Christ, there was an emptiness that could not be explained. No matter how hard we worked to fill this emptiness in our lives, we could not. Before Christ, even the right we knew to do was very difficult causing us untold problems. We have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). The Good News is everything changed when we believed what Christ did for us on the Cross. All our sins were placed upon Christ as He took our place and paid the penalty for our transgressions. He died for our sins and was buried for three days in a tomb. On the third day, Christ rose from the dead and is now seated in Heaven making intercession for our sins. Our faith in the resurrection of Christ gives us a brand-new life in Christ where old things truly pass away. This new life fills our emptiness with the indwelling Spirit and gives us power over the old sin nature. In time we are also filled with an amazing joy and a peace that defies understanding. Our testimony has great power to those who are willing to listen. This is our testimony.

Once the witnesses finished their testimony, then the beast shall overcome them and kill them” (Revelation 11:7). Notice that the witnesses stopped their witness prior to being overcome by the beast. The best had no power over the witnesses until the witnesses stopped sharing their testimony. This is very important. Our testimony becomes foolishness and loses its great power over the forces of evil when we integrate the lies of the world into God’s holy truth. Our testimony is powerless when we believe in science over God’s truth or integrate it with Biblical doctrine. When our testimony is filled with meaningless illustrations and watered-down truth then it loses its power to convict the sinner, it loses its power over the beast system, a system designed by the devil to enslave all of humanity. Remember the beast only comes when the witness stops. Although we will have many that fight against our witness, as long as we continue to witness our testimony, even in the face of violent and rude opposition, then it will keep the beast from arising and killing us and our witness. Stop the witness of our testimony and the beast will arise. We need to be very clear about this truth.

So, what causes the witnesses to stop their testimony? What could cause them to stop witnessing to the fallen world? Was it unimaginable chaos? Was it unchecked anarchy? Although no doubt both, attributed to their decision, I believe it goes much deeper. They stopped their witness because they gave up hope that fallen humanity could change. They saw so-called believers turn away from God. Shockingly, they no longer want to hear that God is working in our lives and that nothing happens by accident. They no longer want to hear about our visions and our prophecies. They no longer want to hear about the little miracles that we see happening in our life every day. Sadly, to say it has become easy to lose hope when we see so many turning away from God and ignoring our messages. It’s so tragic to witness our testimony falling on deaf ears. When one door after another shuts it becomes easier to lose hope in humanity. This is especially tragic when you know that the beast will arise and lead the entire world into bondage when the witness stops. So, dear children, please let me encourage all of you to share your complete testimony often (read the first paragraph again). Please don’t trust in your pastors and evangelist to do this for you. We must all witness asking God to give us an open door so that they will truly listen and accept the Gospel truth.

When the witnesses are killed, and the witness is stopped there is a great earthquake (Revelation 11:13). In reality, this will shake the entire Christian community for what will soon come upon the children of God.  Christians are no longer allowed to witness. “The remnant is sorely frightened.” Notice that after the witness stopped and the beast arose the remnant was still here. They were greatly frightened, not only by the beast, but by the fierce wrath of God being poured out on unrepentant humanity. There is no greater fear that humanity will ever face than the righteous wrath of God. All the wars and all the lawlessness from humanity pale in significance as to what God’s wrath will do to humanity, the earth, and the universe. With the wars and lawlessness, you can hide or fight back, but with the wrath of God, you literally can’t do anything. As fallen humanity cries and curses the God of heaven and earth, the remnant will stand firm even as they too experience great fear. The Bible says, “It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God” (Hebrews 10:31). Thank God, as we shall see God does not leave His children alone to face these calamities falling upon unrepentant humanity.

When the beast turns his wrath upon God’s beloved children, “Here is the patience and the faith of the saints” (Revelation 13:10). Now fallen humanity turns their unholy wrath upon the whole Christian community, everyone who claims Jesus Christ as their Savior. Yes, this is the great persecution and if you think somehow you will magically escape it, then you will not be prepared. You will not stand firm. Only those who are patient and have faith will stand firm. Patience is extremely important as we enter this time of persecution. In the First Century, most believers at the time dealt with persecution in one of three ways. They either stood bravely before their persecutors or they fled for their lives, or worse yet they openly denied their Savior. Patiently waiting for the outcome of the charges filed against you without taking matters into your own hands will be essential. This too will take a great deal of faith believing that God is with you no matter what the outcome is, either going into captivity, being incarcerated, or being killed by the sword, their chosen method of execution (Revelation 13:10). To fight back is not an option for God’s faithful remnant if you are caught or have decided not to run.

The wrath of God now comes upon fallen humanity. “Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus” (Revelation 14:12). When God’s beloved children are viciously attacked, then God will pour out all His wrath. This wrath is so horrific that only two things will allow the faithful remnant to have patience enough to stand firm against the persecution amid the Great Tribulation. They will patiently stand firm only by keeping the commandments of God and having faith in Jesus. It’s insightful that the Bible adds “keeping the commandments of God” to those who now need to stand firm not only against the beast and his evil system but against the wrath of God that’s poured out against all unrighteousness. So, the key to standing firm is obedience to all of God’s beautiful commandments. The biggest challenge during this time will be keeping the commandments on non-retaliation (Matthew 5:38-48) and loving your neighbors as you love yourself (Matthew 22:39). It doesn’t negate the other commandments, but it stresses during this turbulent time we must still act like Christians even if they vehemently refuse to hear our testimony, which most will. Even as they strike out against God and our fellow believers, we must maintain our Christian character. God is watching. God is not only watching but He is still with you working things out according to His divine plan (Hebrews 13:5). As we stand firm, we look forward to seeing Jesus Christ’s glorious coming in the clouds. And all the people said, Amen!

We Are Forward-Looking People (Video)

There is something uniquely different about God’s children. We rarely look back either to reminisce or painfully evaluate past failures. We are a forward-looking people, a true anomaly in the modern world. This is something fallen humanity would love to experience all the time. However, if they are honest, they spend a great deal of their time looking back. They look back not only to evaluate past failures or reminisce but to do something far more damaging. We Are Forward-Looking People

Their obsession of always looking back, further than current events, enters into a deep chasm of captivity. Clearly, this abyss of one’s personal journey is not the same thing as the concrete historical events etched into the annuals of a nation’s heritage. It is, on the other hand, a collection of beliefs about oneself that they have adopted over time, which they believe can never change. It is a collection of past events that they believe have had an incurable effect on their physical or psychological wellbeing. As we shall see, these people tend to get trapped in the past causing them unending turmoil, which adversely affects their lives. Continue reading We Are Forward-Looking People
