The Amazing Truth of What We Were Originally Created to Be

I firmly believe that we would need to be blind if we haven’t seen the great trouble humanity and the world is experiencing. We appear to be on the brink of imploding. That is, like the ancient Roman Empire, we will not be destroyed from the great forces from outside, but from within. The trajectory of humanity and the world will end in death and destruction, if we don’t return to what we were originally created to be. We need to return to the beginning to understand, the amazing truth of what we were originally created to be. To the very beginning when humanity was created by God in His image, in the image of Him He created them (See Genesis 1:27). No one can really say how long our first parents, Adam and Eve, were in the Garden of Eden or even how many others were there with them. But one thing we know for sure that those who were created had a personal and dynamic relationship with God. For He walked with them in the Garden in the cool of the day (See Genesis 3:8). God spoke to them in an audible voice giving them instructions and seeing to their every need. There was great freedom with only one known restriction. There was nothing to harm them. They had independent thought as they named and had dominion over all other forms of life.

They were living and enjoying their lives as they were created to be in total innocence, until they disobeyed. Every believer knows the story of the fall. How that once beautiful relationship with their Creator was now severed. In essence God let them go allowing them to sink deeper and deeper into the inevitable consequences of their sin. A remarkable thing surfaced almost immediately about human nature. They simply could not continue without some higher power directing them. Someone or something outside themselves giving them comfort or courage when things were not going so well. This longing caused them to fashion all manner of creatures, sticks and stones to guide their paths. As they advanced in knowledge of the universe they chose stars and planets to guide their thoughts and actions. Although God’s chosen people, the Jews, in time threw off these crutches as useless idols and returned to God, they as a people were not ready to accept the culmination of their faith, the restored life in Christ. They along with the larger part of humanity have remained dead in their trespasses, cut off and separated from their Holy God, their Creator. So many then and now have missed the good news that Jesus Christ came to bring life. (See John 10:10)

For the past two thousand years, just a faithful remnant has truly understood the new life and entered into it with great joy. A new life that forgets what is behind and presses on to a glorious future with a peace that defies understanding (See Philippians 3:13-14; 4:7). Yet, the greatest part about this new life is the restored relationship with our one True God, our Creator. To be able to talk and walk with God along life’s narrow way. To long for those times to be in the Spirit, listening and learning from the Master Himself. To receive His counsel when things don’t go so well, or when we are mistreated by others. To receive His direction when we are faced with a fork in the road. To never feel loneliness, anxiety, or depression for more than just a moment in time, because His counsel and love is always ever present. Even so called righteous anger is very short lived causing us to truly forgive and forget. No matter what happens to the rest of humanity and the world we have the assurance that we will not suffer as the pagan. That nothing can separate us from the love of God (See Romans 8:38).

On the other hand, as I have already alluded too, the rest of humanity will not be so fortunate. They have rejected this new life as a lie continuing on to find other things to support them in their misery. Not unlike the pagan who sought out their idols to give them direction, modern man has sought out his higher learning to be his help in the time of need and his sure course to a happy and fulfilled life. The problem, however, is it has not led to a fulfilled life, but to a life of disappointments and deep-seated emotional or psychological problems. In most, leading to a life of greater immorality. At which point we see the God of heaven letting go, allowing them to sink deeper into the inevitable consequences of their sin (See Romans 1:24,26,28). This I believe, is what’s happening right now. Fallen humanity has rejected their God. They have rejected this once beautiful and majestic relationship to independently try and solve their own problems through their higher learning or by creating other gods. So, God has let them go. How tragic. As fallen humanity sinks deeper into the consequences of their sins, they will become the cause of their own destruction.

Should the faithful remnant give up? God forbid! They say that proof is in the pudding or if it works I’ll take it. The fallen world is no longer listening. They have heard the old, old story. They have received the invitations. They have heard the promise, but have they seen it work? We say that God has given us a new life in Christ. We claim that God speaks to us and everything is so rosy, but the world is crying out in agony, yelling at the top of her lungs, “Where is the proof.” Dear friends, we are the proof. When tragedy strikes how do we act? When we are faced with a sudden emotional or even a psychological problem? How do we act? What do we do? Does the world see us running to the world’s counsel (or even so-called biblical counsel based on the methods of the world) and their array of drugs? Do they instead see us kneel in submission to our Father in Heaven listening to His counsel through the indwelling Spirit, through God’s Holy Word the Bible, or from His faithful servants who are proving their worth by walking as they should? When you are wronged in public how do you react? Do you react as the world does and respond with hateful language? Finally, how about your spouse. Can they see Christ living in you at all times? Can they see the new life in-Christ, becoming more like Christ daily?

In conclusion, have we grown indistinguishable from the crowd? We should feel compelled to always stand out from the rest. To let our light shine ever so brightly in world full of darkness (See Matthew 5:14-16). To let people see the changes that God has made in our lives. To always publicly give Him the glory. We need to be cognitive of this every time we take a step outdoors into the public arena and when they ask about the hope that we have be ready and willing to give it (See I Peter 3:15). Let me encourage you to tell them about your brand-new life where old things are passing away and behold all things have become new (See II Corinthians 5:17). To tell them that this was all accomplished by God, through His Son, Jesus Christ on the Cross. Dear friends, we can tell the old, old story, but they also need to see the change in us, they need to see the proof or everything we say is meaningless. There is great power in our personal testimony when they can also see the change. This is the amazing truth of what we were originally created to be, our new life that has a very personal and dynamic relationship with the God of all creation. Amen
